Restored Colonial w/ modern amenities - layout flows beautifully from public to private space. Prestigious local architect Miguel Rojano combines indigenous materials with a contemporary sensibility to create an elegant, comfortable home. Features include air-conditioning in 3 bedrooms, ceiling fans in every room, a filtered, pressurized water system, and wiring for internet & cable.
Floors of polished concrete accented with pasta tile are cool on warm days. Soft lighting flows from built-in wall sconces with dimmer lighting. Original 18' high ceilings retain the character of bygone days.
As you enter La Casa Tranquila, double doors with wrought iron protectores invite you into the first sala. In front of you is a second sala, a sitting room, complete with stereo, perfect for an intimate gathering. Double doors lead you to an open-air center patio where you can relax in a yucatecan hammock.
Next to this patio, you find an oversized kitchen with center island, brand new refrigerator, dishwasher and gas-oven with overhead vent for preparing your Mexican fiestas. Filtered water in the kitchen extends to the freezer where plenty of ice is ready for refreshing margaritas. The open dining area, seating six, features a stunning Mayan frieze which fills an entire wall. This area is wired for telephone, so that you can answer calls from friends and family wherever you are.
The view is enhanced by glass floor-to ceiling doors that open to a rear patio, where you can recline on handmade iron lounge chairs or keep cool in a dipping pool fed by water which flows over a wall of river stones. Top branches of an ancient Saba, the revered tree of the Maya, peeks over the wall from the neighboring yard, offering shade. The patio is protected from the elements by classic colonial roof tiles. This back-yard area houses a separate bodega, which houses a washing machine and dryer as well as the pump and filtering system for the pool and fountain.
Set apart from the public space you find three spacious air-conditioned bedrooms. The master bedroom features a queen-sized wrought iron bed, an antique ropero (armoire), a wooden chest, and iron & glass side tables, all handmade. The master bath has a beautiful polished concrete shower and 18' ceilings with frosted glass roof accents that play with the light in a magical way. This room is cable and Internet ready.
The second bedroom also has a queen-sized iron 4-poster bed, antique ropero, wooden chest and iron & glass side table. This bedroom opens directly to the second bath, beautifully accented in green-hued polished concrete, with a circular-window opening to the inner courtyard.
The third bedroom can be used either as office or TV/family room and is cable, telephone and Internet ready. It is furnished with a twin-sized sofa bed complete with ample cushions, a desk & chair, a television and a handmade stand.
Casa Tranquila is set in a quiet neighborhood, yet is only a few blocks from the excitement of the zocalo. Also within easy walking distance is the Santa Ana farmer's market and Santiago Park, where local artisans display their goods every weekend. It is a perfect place to return after a night night out in Merida.
